English Tutor Volunteers

The Golden Age Village (GAV) is an independent-living affordable senior housing community, founded by Dr. Frances Wu and opened in 1980, with the goal of creating a safe and affordable living environment for low-income seniors. The property was developed with funding through the HUD Section 202 program, which provides funding for seniors who are 62 years or older.

GAV has 120 units and is home to about 150 seniors. To enhance the residents’ quality of life, the property provides management services, monthly birthday parties, a karaoke and movie club, computer classes and exercise classes. GAV also has a gym, a library, and a multi-purpose room.

The residents at GAV are mostly first-generation immigrants from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, many with limited English proficiency. The goal of the English class is to teach basic English, e.g., how to take the bus, ask for translators, and ask for directions, so that the senior residents can live independently.

The English tutor volunteers must be fluent in English and speak Mandarin or Cantonese.
